insTuner - Chromatic Tuner for Guitar, Ukulele and String Instruments App Reviews

17 Customer Reviews:

To developer: Clicking speaker icons usually causes mute-unmute behaviour—not panels to slide down. How about just have a button or triangle labelled “Tone Generator”, or make the whole window visible when you start the app? It’s not obvious that there’s a hidden panel that will appear, and not all users consider the tone generator to be a secondary function of this app. I got the app 90% for the tone generator, because that’s what I use the iOS version for. Just a note to potential users: "Fine tuning mode" and "Historical tuning mode”, both clearly present in the screenshots and what make the tuner portion of this App most useful, are premium PAY add-ons.

Wow! I’ve been looking for a quality tuner for Mac and this one is by far the best. I use it for my guitars and my ukulele, and I absolutly love it. It is impressively accurate, and I would recommend this to any musician with a Mac.

I’m a vocalist, and sometimes when buying sheet music for a song, it’s difficult to tell exactly how the song is meant to be sung. I recently bought sheet music that is WAY different from the way the song is ever performed, and I was thrilled to find that I could not only tune my own voice, but tune songs playing in my iTunes using this app! It was a BIG plus and welcome surprise! the app is also very detailed and easy to read, which I love!

Great

Best free guitar tuner. Way better than the ones online.

BOB@#@# · 11 years ago

After installation I was able to tune one guitar, but then the app closed itself and would not reopen. After I restarted the computer it opened again, only to close itself after about 5 seconds. It worked well when it stayed open! Edit: It does open! It just immediately minimizes to a little tuning fork near the clock in the upper right of the screen.

Rdunlin · 11 years ago

Generally a great tuner. However, I believe that the iOS version is better. This version sometimes thinks that my double bass’s E string is a B! However, it still works when you play loudly.

Mr.JoeyMCBOB · 11 years ago

It launched fine the first time. I was testing its response against a tuning fork, and it reported the fork to be in tune sometimes, and sharp or flat at others. Not a good sign. Upon closing the app, I was unable to launch it again. It appears to launch and immediately crash. There is no minimized window as one reviewer had said. If I have to restart my Mac, and all the many other applications I have open, it isn’t worth it.

madtowncyclist · 11 years ago

First, as another reviewer stated, the interface sometimes disappears, but there is a little tuning fork in the Mac menu bar to get it back. This happens when you go to preferences. Go to preferences by the little gear icon, screen will disappear when leave Preferences, see above. You also quit this way. Could use a manual, help selection, at least a read me file. Some of the screen shots shown are for the paid version. I think to get anything out of this app, to easily tune your guitar, you need to get the paid version.

Doesnt Work Well At All

not nearly sensiitve enough. needs work.

Mrflea · 10 years ago

I use the app to tune my Acoustic Guitar. I primarily use the iPhone version of this app, but the OSX version has been working just as well for me. I find the interface for the OSX version is a little more simplistic; I actually prefer the more sophisticated interface of the iPhone version. However this OSX version manages to detect when my guitar is in tune just about as well as the iPhone version. I should also mention that INSTuner offers the most precise feedback of all the other tuners I have tried on the app store. I think it’s a very well designed app and it does exactly what I need it to.

Works great - I have eveyrthing from classical accoustics to steel string concert bodies. Works just fine on electric. I keep it open while I’m practicing to music - you can pretty much dope the key progressions without a chord chart, etc. It’s really handy.

fjjh · 10 years ago

I got this and it simply doesn’t work. It is very difficult to turn off unless you figure out how. I strongly discourage anyone getting this. What a piece of crap. You can’t erase it because it says its in use, but nowhere to be found. I had to restart to get rid of it. DON’T DOWNLOAD THIS!!!!!

I installed this on Mavericks and it works great. Thanks

I really love the iOS version of the premium version. I’d say the best feature on there is the transposition feature. I play the trumpet, so it’s very important to be able to see the notes for non-concert pitch instruments. The free version of this OS X version was pretty good, and I thought I would get more by upgrading. Honestly, I’m kind of sorry I wasted $3 on the upgrade. The additional features are buggy on this version (I’m running El Capitan for what it’s worth). The tuning seems to stop after a few seconds and shows your pitch frozen, as if it stopped listening. Once you play a new note, it shows your pitch for that note for another few seconds, then freezes again…kind of weird. I was really hoping to see the transposition feature on here like the iOS version. Hopefully you guys can add it as a free update :) It seems like the free version works better than the paid version. Developers- you might want to look into that.

Gave it one star because zero was not an option

This program opened up once and then crashed. I cannot get it to open. A complete waste of money.

Not Sure What Other People are Complaining About

The app works great for me. Opens. Tunes. Closes. Bam.

Krevbot · 10 years ago

Works great on iMac

I'm a fretless bass player, so having a very responsive, accurate tuner is really important for when I'm checking intonation on the fly. This app is simple, intuitive and accurate. I can tune my strings accurately also - my lowest string is B below the E string (standard bass tuning). I've been a professional bassist for 40 years and have played 6 string fretless exclusively for the last 30 years. I saw several negative reviews and don't know why these folk have had trouble with the app. I recommend this app highly.

JazzBass13 · 4 years ago

Wouldn't Recommend :/ (don't buy!)

App is slow to respond when I pluck the string going through an audio interface. When I try to go to support, it sends me to a chinese site that has been blocked. $3 gone!

Scam - DO NOT PURCHASE THIS STUPID APP

As everyone else said, you pay for this app to literally not even open. I want my money back.

Failed download

It never downloaded to my iPhone. Waste of $$. The support page is in Chinese. Thanks Apple, for your diligence.

DOES NOT LAUNCH

I just paid for this tuner. I have it for my iphone and it works good there. But on Macbook running Catalina, it won't open. They should take it down until they get it fixed. No?

Rafaelite · 6 years ago

Don’t get it

This app was a huge was of money. Wont even recognize a simple audio interface….

gage_owens · 7 years ago

Strange UI choices; Solid tuning.

App installs itself in the menubar. So when you open it for the first time, it doesn't show up. (And at least in version 1.3, the menu icon doesn't have an inverse mode for Dark-Mode menubars). Once you realize that it's in the menubar, it's a decent app. The app works best if you disable "Use ambient noise reduction" in System Preferences -> Sound -> Input. The "Historical" mode is probably the most useful, but isn't the default. There seems to be no way to toggle the mode shown in the preview image.

nerdgod · 9 years ago

Does not open.

I just downloaded this app for my MAC. It will not open. I feel like I have been scammed by this company. Apple needs to take this out of its App Store until the company can verify that it actuallly works. Once it is working, the company should provide a free upgrade to all customers who have purchased this app.
